NAMM 2012 was probably the best show they have ever put on...really! Over 90,000 attendees, 1400+ vendors and so much to see and take in. Loved every moment of the show and here are some highlights featured on my MOMz Rock the House Show, which aired on OC Talk Radio January 27th, 2012.

On my show that aired on OC Talk Radio 12noon PST January 27th, interviews from NAMM - featuring Tish Ciravolo, Founder and President of Daisy Rock Guitars, Phillipe from Ultimate Ears/Logitech, Brian Rothchild - Co-Founder of the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, ZVex Pedal talk, Mike from Fender Custom Guitars, a few songs from Nick and Sam at the Fender Booth, and my ramblings about a $160 plastic ukele that looked like mine when I was 5! (Inflation??). Talked to so many great vendors, watched people line up to meet and greet their fav artists and just soaked it all in.

Back in 2008, Laura abandoned a successful legal career and rocketed onto the San Diego music scene with the release of her first album, "Girl Like This,” finding critical acclaim and a home in her local radio market. Within weeks of Laura’s music debut, however, she learned she had triple negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of the disease, and immediately underwent surgery and seven months of grueling chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Laura thought her musical dreams, and perhaps her very life, were over.

When Laura's cancer treatments finally ended in 2009, Laura’s song, "Float Away," won Americana Single the Year at the Los Angeles Music Awards in Hollywood, California. She launched a tour of the UK to promote "Girl Like This" and her music found a home in multiple major BBC radio markets, landing as high as No. 5 on the Amazon UK charts.

Throughout her cancer treatments, Laura continued to write music, but with a new sense of purpose and clarity. Throughout 2010, Laura recorded those songs, and she also wrote a memoir about her musical/life/cancer adventures.
In early 2011, Laura released her sophomore album, "I'm Still Here," including the songs written during her cancer treatments. The album was produced by Matthew Embree, the frontman and lead guitarist of indie rock sensation, Rx Bandits. When Laura released her new album, she was eager to find out if the world would embrace her new clarity. It wasn't long before Laura received her answer: For twenty-three consecutive weeks in 2011, Laura was ranked in the Top 10 by Billboard Magazine as one of the Top 50 emerging artists in the world (peaking at Number 3). Respected UK music magazine, Maverick Magazine, raved that "I'm Still Here" is a five-star, "must-have" album. Influential music blogger Wildy's World called it a "brilliant and emotionally naked artistic turn."

Laura has become somewhat of a Youtube sensation, as well. The video for her bucket list song, "George Clooney," garnered Youtube Honors in Canada, Australia, Spain, India, Japan, France, Germany, and more as a most-watched video. Her video for "Heart Inside Your Palm" amassed 250,000+ views in five days. And her video for “I’m Still Here,” released in late September 2011, already has over 650,000 views and several Youtube Honors, including Top 12 most watched video in entertainment and 31st most watched overall.
Meanwhile, Laura's book has also found success. Her funny and poignant memoir, Rocking the Pink, will be released as a “lead title” in Spring 2012 through Seal Press, a division of U.S. publishing powerhouse Perseus Books (Publisher of the Year in 2007). The book has already been endorsed by actor Jack Black, Grammy-winning music producer, Mark Hudson, and best-selling author, Joni Rodgers.

The multi-talented Tina deVaron is an acclaimed singer, songwriter, and jazz pianist whose scintillating combination of jazz for kids and original songs about motherhood have made her a favorite with audiences around the country.

Tina is launching a fresh, interactive family jazz event, "Tunes with Tina" at Manhattan's chic new Setai Hotel. She's also going into her seventh smash year as resident entertainer at the world-famous Carlyle Hotel’s Bemelmans Bar where she established the popular “Madeline’s Tea” for children, Tina has reached a diverse array of audiences from coast to coast with her talents as both composer and performer, and has earned invitations to perform with stars ranging from Frank Sinatra to Tom Waits.

This recession has kicked our butts. I really don't know anyone who hasn't been affected by the economy over the past few years. One thing is very clear to me though. You can let hard times drag you down or you can fight back and be your strongest self, your biggest cheerleader, and get your funk out.

I have been a fighter all of my life. I have never been afraid to be alone, live alone and face a challenge head on. In fact, when someone turns me down, rejects me, and tells me I'm just not good enough (or implies it), I have learned to come back stronger. When someone insults me or is rude, I refuse to take it. And as a child, I faced all kinds of personal issues with two parents who were never meant to marry in the first place, and I was left with a very controlling mother who had me riding an emotional rollercoaster. I learned so much about juggling my emotions and staying strong and believing in myself. I have no idea how, but it was just some kind of inner strength, while living alone with my mother in NYC at age 8, finger painting and listening to music.

At age 10, I received one of the greatest gifts my mother ever gave me (beside the gift of life, of course)...my first guitar. I can picture her walking down the corridor of our apartment building holding that little Yamaha guitar she had bought that night with her boyfriend. And that gift would be my companion for years to come, keeping me amused and filled with creative energy in a childhood that was less than happy and peaceful. That gift helped me on numerous occasions to get my funk out and I continue my creative journey in so many other aspects of my life. Because finding your own creative outlet is so important on this rollercoaster ride.
Find something that inspires you, intrigues you, keeps finding its way into your dreams and nags you, because it is never too late to get your own funk out and find out more about who you and what you are capable of. You just might be surprised.

San Francisco Singer/Songwriter Joyo Velarde on the Momz ROCK the House Show!

Biography

If you lived in California in the 90s, chances are you've sung Joyo's refrain in the shower. After the Manila-born NorCal transplant finished studying opera in Rome, she returned to the Bay Area, where she and future husband Lyrics Born recorded what would go on to be Solesides' greatest hit, a little number called "Balcony Beach." The song appeared on 1997's Latyrx, a record that went on to sell over 100,000 copies worldwide.

As part of the seminal indie hip-hop label Quannum Projects - a group whose founders included Lyrics Born & Lateef the Truthspeaker, Blackalicious, DJ Shadow, Jeff Chang (Can't Stop Won't Stop/VIBE Magazine,) and Joseph Patel (MTV) - Joyo quickly found her place as "The Quannum Songstress." In 2000 her first official solo offering - the jazzy and soulful "People Like Me" - was released on the label compilation Quannum Spectrum.

In support of the album, Joyo and the crew toured relentlessly, which gave her the opportunity not only to hone her vocal and performance skills, but also to expand her steady base of loyal listeners from the US across the globe, from Australia to Europe to Japan. The following year, she further displayed her versatility with the cult hit "Sweet Angels," a lilting reggae-inspired tune that quickly became a fan favorite.

Music is her first love, of course, and her versatility as a singer/songwriter, belter, storyteller and explosive live performer knows no bounds.

But Joyo has been recognized as a fashion icon, as well. She's been featured in San Francisco's 7x7 magazine (Sept 1, 2006) as one of the Bay Area's trendsetters and style-makers to watch, and has received endorsements and performed at exclusive fashion shows and events for Puma, Evisu, Diesel, Upper Playground, Adidas, among others.

Having already appeared twice on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and featured on over 20 albums, including Lyrics Born's blockbuster indie classics Later That Day (on which she performed and co-wrote 10 songs, including the ubiquitous "Callin' Out" - featured on commercials for Diet Coke and Motorola), 2005's Same @#$ Different Day, and 2008's Everywhere at Once, 2010 finally sees Joyo step into the spotlight, with the release of her solo debut.

ABOUT GINA SPIRO KESSLER
Gina Spiro Kessler is known for her heartfelt style, which is a mix of many kinds of rock, her favorite genre. Influenced by so many, her voice has been likened to everyone from Janis Joplin to Patsy Cline. A native of Wisconsin, Gina sang with rock and folk bands touring the country as a solo act, and then with various duos and bands. She eventually settled into the Los Angeles area in the mid 80's,
singing with Dynamo Hum and Mark Pont at venues such as The House of Blues, The Mint and The Key Club. During this time, she also worked as a music and sound assistant for TV and eventually film, with sound and music credits on movies such as Total Recall, Hunchback of Notre Dame and Dances with Wolves.

After leaving LA in 1997 for South Orange County, she met up with many great musicians who were playing with their bands in between touring and session work. Gina is now very active in the OC music circle, singing with Martin Gerschwitz (keyboards) currently of Iron Butterfly, either with their duo, his trio,
various jam bands or The Kings of Classic Rock. She also sings with The Ravers, Dynamo Hum, The Disruptors and sits in with any other local artists who allow her too!!

Gina continues on her never ending quest to bring great heart and soul to the people, bringing back memories of great classic rock music. She continues to write, and is inspired by her life
and it's endless stories and hopes to someday put out another CD. She is most grateful to all who support her and enjoy her energy and sound, for without them, the love and motivation are futile.

Second Careers Rock Out. Top Career Changing Tips

Who would think that I’d grace the airwaves with Kathy Valentine, bass guitarist for the all-girl, punk rock/pop band The Go-Gos?
But I did– with KBPK radio host Janeane Bernstein on MomzRockTheHouse.
Career change is cool these days.
Last week, I had the opportunity to do an interview about my new book, What’s Next? Follow Your Passion and Find Your Dream Job, and dole out advice on career reinvention on OC Talk Radio with Bernstein. “I’m one of those second act people,” she told me at the get-go. She’s hip to it.
After graduating from Syracuse University, where she studied TV, Radio and Film at the Newhouse School of Communications, she began her career working for a consulting firm designing workshops in the training and development field for banking clients like Chase Manhattan (now JPMorgan Chase).
When she lost her job in a downsizing move, she supported herself with top-paying freelance assignments, but knew she wanted to do something different. It paid the bills, but she was unhappy.
Her passion had always been radio and television. So she decided to head back to school, and began taking a couple of classes in the Media and Technology program at Boston University, while continuing to work full-time. She eventually earned her doctorate there.
It wasn’t, however, until she went to a Syracuse alumni luncheon, where she met an older woman, an actress, that her new path began to take shape. She told Bernstein about radio and voiceover work and gave her the name of her teacher to contact.
And so it began. Bernstein took voiceover classes at night and loved it. When a training workshop video she was handling for Hewlett-Packard needed a narrator, she stepped up. Soon after, she left the corporate world and started her own radio show at the University of California’s independent station.
Two years ago, she launched her current show with the artistic talent of designer and mommy rocker Judy Davids of the Detroit band The Mydols. It features women artists and industry experts talking about everything from their careers in music, to tips on going green and the challenges of getting your kids to eat healthy, and…how to change careers.
She made the right moves:
• She took her time. No rash decisions.
• She went back to school and enrolled in classes while she still had her full-time work.
• She started one class at a time.
• She networked via her alumni association.
• She followed her passion.

If you are feeling more in the pink than the blues, maybe the place to be on Sunday is the Mind, Body and Spirit event in Santa Ana. It features local women rockers and will help benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure Orange County and the Lupus Foundation of America.

Mind, Body and Spirit is produced by Janeane Bernstein, a friend of The Mom Blog and the DJ and host of Momz Rock The House radio show heard on 90.1-FM KBPK on Saturdays, 6-7 p.m. She also brings us the annual Mamapalooza festival. Here’s a story we did about Janeane in 2008 when her show was on a different station.

In addition to performances by Orange County’s own Adrina Thorpe and Tiana Star, entertainers also include teen band Ribbons of Fire, a group formed to raise awareness about breast cancer. And there will be a raffle to win a Daisy guitar signed by Judy Davids of the Mydols.

“Real Housewife” Returns for the Pampered Lady Cruise

NEWPORT BEACH, CA One of the stars from the hit reality series the “The Real Housewives of Orange County” is back for Parenting OC Magazine’s Pampered Lady Cruise on March 21.
The Pampered Lady Cruise, heading into its seventh voyage, is the perfect ladies-only mini vacation (and serves as a great Valentine’s Day gift, too.) The exclusive yacht has been featured in several television shows such as “CSI Miami”, “Dexter” and HBO hit “Entourage”.

We have a short-term goal of playing at the next Mamapalooza (GULP! Less than 3 months away!) - May 3, 2009 at the UC Irvine campus, coordinated by yours truly....I better go practice!! My wonderful kids and incredible husband ROCK my world and keep cheering me on during this rockin' journey! And I actually think I might be able to convert Ronny from junkfood junkster, lover of fast food to some great vegetarian eats at Mother's Market. He actually liked the Inferno Wrap I brought him!

I have spent the past few days at NAMM and it has been incredible! Yesterday, I was blown away by all of the music products and companies. I think I read that over 85,000 people attend NAMM. There is one guitar company after the next, rooms filled with artists wailing on drums, guitars, and whatever instruments and musical devices they can get their hands on. Appearances by major artists in the industry meeting fans, etc.

And then there is the INCREDIBLE DAISY ROCK BOOTH!! Check out my pictures on (www.momzrockthehouse.com and www.myspace.com/momzrockthehouse) and you'll get a little glimpse of just how amazing this has been. They also have a stage where so far I have seen Absinthe, Janet Robin, The Raymies and....The Bangles!! Just one of these amazing days...and then to meet the Bangles was icing on the cake. Loved the HUGE birthday cake Daisy Rock ordered for two of the band members. The crowd waiting for autographs got a chance to eat cake and get signed pictures and Daisy Rock catalogues. Let Music manage your Inner Life

I read a great article about an incredible musician in NY, who has always let music manage his inner life. Inner life? I first thought what is his inner life? But it all made sense. I've been doing it all my life.

Music has played a huge role all my life. I remember being a young child, maybe four, living in Long Island and hearing Santana and The Beatles. Songs from these artists bring me back to being young again and I remember how I felt about myself and my surroundings like it was yesterday.

And just like you, music has eased my heartaches, my sadness, lifted my moods, and built my self-esteem, established dreams and aspirations. In my early twenties, I went through a break-up and a job loss within a week of one another. Right after, I kept having dreams I was playing electric guitar! The truth was, I owned one and kept thinking I would like to take lessons again and become a really good player. After several dreams of me being a rock goddess (or maybe I was playing a mean air guitar?), I decided to pay attention to the wake up call.

So, I am sure some of you are reading this and can relate to those songs you like to crank up from your past. I always loved anything Aerosmith and of course, there is Boston, "Long Time," or rocking out to AC/DC Back in Black elevates my mood, and helps me let myself go and relax for a moment before I shift back into Mommy mode.

Music moves me in so many ways and in some many different genres. It amazes me on a day that I might be down, and it's been a little more frequent lately with the economy in turmoil and hearing one sad story after the next, that music has a way of helping me make sense out of it all and reflect on what is really important and what matters.

The other night, I realized that a good station to set the mood for homework or just to try to get everyone to chill to is 94.7 The Wave, because my kids dial it down a notch and actually relax. I actually have more patience! And they know a lot of the songs, because it's our mellow station. My daughter has been falling asleep to The Wave for almost 2 years now. Of course, we do love KUCI 88.9fm for the diversity and range of music and PA shows. In fact, one morning on the way to school, one of the DJs was playing a Sesame Street song that was completely wacky and hilarious! In my sleepy state, we laughed all the way to school. And the kids are still talking about it!

So to sum up this long ramble, don't be afraid to crank it up a notch when you drop those kids off or right before that big important meeting, or maybe on your way to seeing your in-laws. And get your kids dancing around the house to your music. We all need to manage our inner lives, our contentment, our uncertainties, the day in - day out chaos of our lives and if music can do this for you GREAT! I have actually had some great ideas generated around the dinner table with my young daughters. They are so open and creative, and I love how their minds work. When we get older, we tend to let our creativity fly out the window and worry about what others think of what we did, what we said and what we thought, and never make the time to nurture our creative interests. I like the innocent and pure ideas of my girls and how one little idea can become something big if you pay attention. As a matter of fact, Momz Rock the House was a name created by my daughter and I while we were bouncing around show names and I said, "Momz Rock..." and she finished my sentence with ...."the House!" And my show Momz Rock the House was born!

I have an electric guitar my Dad bought for me at 14 and I still love it. It holds such memories for me. I got my first guitar at 10, which I lost in a house fire. It was the cutest little Yamaha, but then at 12 I went to Manhattan (all by myself on a train with cash) and bought myself another one to replace it. (Can't imagine ever letting my daughter do that by the way!)

I started playing seriously in my early twenties (just a few years ago...ahem, alright several years ago in another chapter of my life). And now, I'm a Mom with an unfulfilled need to ROCK out on my electric guitar and where am I going to find some other Moms to form a band? Judy Davids of the Mydols did it at 42 and recruited some friends and 6+ years later, she is rockin' out across Detroit. So, as I always say...it is never too late to become what you might have been.

So, I am on a mission to find some moms/women who would like to start a band here in the OC!

I just received the latest CD from Lisa Loeb and it is great! It is called Camp Lisa and if you ever went to camp or have kids in camp, you can really relate. Produced by Loeb’s recently launched record label Furious Rose Productions and her writing partners and frequent collaborators Dan Petty and Michelle Lewis, Camp Lisa is largely inspired by ‘70s-style rock and pop and Loeb’s own cherished camp memories. Had a BLAST at the Parenting and Kids Expo!

This past Saturday I emceed the 4th Annual Parenting and Kids Expo produced by Parenting Orange County Magazine at the Irvine Spectrum and it was so much fun! Yes, it was hot, but people were loving the vibe. Great vendors like Boogie Wipes, Saddleback Hospital, The Game Truck, KUCI 88.9fm, and so many more. Plus lots of freebies, like mac and cheese for the kids (and big kids!), gummy vitamins, KOCE, Strike Orange County, Greenedge Kids, and so many more. Plus, great entertainment from cloggers and international dancers to musical performers like the Hullabaloo Band, Stacy Robin and Adrina Thorpe. There was even a fashion show featuring organic environmental conscious products and the kids did a great job modeling.

Had a chance to meet lots of Moms, lots of people wanted my "Momz Rock!" black tank and others learned all about KUCI and my shows. It was really a great day playing music, meeting people and watching some incredible entertainment

Orange County Museum of Art Family Arts Day was a Blast!

I took my girls to the OC Museum of Art Family Arts Day and it was sooooo much fun! There was a great band playing, called the Breakaways, who played while we decorated t-shirts, made fish decorations (or whatever you call these cool things!) and walked around for a tour of the '60s art collection, Peter Saul and others were on display. Very interesting collection of artwork. We were mesmorized and I had a brief moment to myself when my girls were busy counting the 216 beer bottles on display.

The next event is in September, Back to School Cool! ...and we'll be there!

Yesterday, I hosted Momz Rock the House Music Fest at Original Mike's and it was really alot of fun! The performers, Adrina Thorpe, Stacy Robin, Debra Davis Band, Absinthe and Colette Aubrey were all absolutely amazing! The event, in Association with the Orangewood Children's Foundation, also included KUCI 88.9 fm were I host my radio show Moms Rockin' the House on Thursday's, OC Moms.com, The OC Register, American Red Cross of Orange County, Serenity Wellness Center, Parenting Orange County Magazine, Orange County Museum of Art, West Coast Radiology Center, Total Woman Atmosphere and Day Spa, Yogaworks, and lots of great giveaways like a signed copy of Judy Davids book, Rock Star Mommy, Bodega Chocolates, Lighfull Smoothies, Irvine Spine and Wellness Massage Certificates, OC Pavilion tickets, plus the new Momz Rock the House tank tops. We also gave away a gorgeous bubble gum pink Daisy Rock Guitar to an ecstatic 11 year old. Just love Original Mike's and we lucked out with incredible weather - and an amazing vibe!

Janeane was raised in Manhattan and Connecticut and...POOF! She is now the mother of two beautiful girls, happily married to an incredible man she met at a bookstore in Boston, DJ/Host of Momz Rock the House internet radio show, featuring women in the arts and experts in numerous fields. Thursday mornings from 10am-1pm, she hosts a LIVE show "Moms Rockin the House" on KUCI 88.9fm in Orange County - www.kuci.org.

In between juggling motherhood and radio, she records voice-over projects, writes, and dreams of learning how to shred on her electric guitar. Janeane holds degrees in Education and TV, Radio and Film from Syracuse University, and a doctorate in Educational Media and Technology (she calls it mental bookcamp!).
She left the corporate world after having her first child and dreaming of a more creative life, and began studying acting and voice-over in Boston at CP Casting thanks to a chance meeting with an older actress at a Syracuse alumni event (she is thankful no one recorded her on-camera class being 8 months prego!).

After landing in CA with her VO demo, husband and infant daughter, she studied voice-over in LA with some incredible commercial and animation casting directors. She is currently represented in Los Angeles by Solid Talent and the Berzon Agency for On-Camera and VO projects in Orange County, and was a recent finalist in the UCI Screenwriting Scene Festival this past spring. She just completed the UCI Screenwriting Program and her first comedic screenplay.
For the past two years, Janeane has been Regional Coordinator of "Mamapalooza Rocks the OC!" producing a Mom music festival each May in Orange County, CA. This year's international Mamapalooza festival was held at the UCI campus with incredibly talented Mom rocker Meredith Brooks performing her latest Children's CD, "If I Could Be..." Janeane has also been a weekly contributor on ChickChat Radio, a nationally syndicated XM satellite show, featuring a Mom rocker/musical performer each week from Mamapalooza. In July, she hosted the "Momz Rock the House Music Fest" in Orange County in Association with the the Orangewood Children's Foundation, and will be producing more events in LA and the OC.

Janeane believes that it is never too late to become what you might have been, and that chocolate and sleep are essential to motherhood.
